Abstract
This book is developed in consonance with the ongoing educational reforms in both the basic and higher education levels. As a whole, the new General Education (GE) curriculum aims to "expose undergraduate students to various domains of knowledge and ways of comprehending social and natural realities, developing in the process intellectual competencies and civic capacities" (CHED Memorandum Order No. 20, series of 2013). The goal of Mathematics in the Modern World (MMW), one of the eight core courses in the new GE curriculum, is to provide students with a broader range of skills in understanding the various dimensions of mathematics deemed to be essential in developing intellectual, technical, ethical, and practical competencies of individuals.

This book, which carries the same title as the course, was primarily developed to meet the objectives of the new GE curriculum, particularly of MMW. In its entirety, it discusses the nature and functionality of mathematics, with emphasis on deeper and broader appreciation of its practical, intellectual, and aesthetic dimensions. The first part of the book discusses the nature and language of mathematics, especially focusing on its role in understanding the patterns that occur in nature and in explaining how these principles can be used to address current issues and problems of the world. The second part tackles selected functional arms of mathematics, aiming to highlight its connection to other fields. Module 4 familiarizes students with the dynamics of voting and apportionment, two equally significant concepts in decision-making and corporate and economic planning. Module 5 elevates the treatment of geometry to the realm of symmetries to aesthetics, accentuated towards artistic and cultural considerations. Module 6, perhaps, may appear new to students as it talks about Graph Theory, which has proven to be a powerful tool in addressing social and technological concerns. Module 7 enhances students' numerical and analytical skills when it comes to data-driven decisions, while Module 8 tackles coding schemes for identification, privacy, and security purposes. Module 9 equips students with statistical tools to make sense of quantitative data, thus developing their skills in data analysis and decision-making. Finally, Module 10 introduces linear programming as another method of modeling and solving real-life problems.

The book is aimed not only at providing students with the necessary knowledge and skills as future professionals in their chosen fields but imbue upon them the desired values that may be demanded from them as members of the community. Included in particular are promoting and upholding honesty and integrity in the use of mathematics to address issues and concerns in nature and in
the world.

The authors are extremely indebted to Dr. Jonathan Macayan and Dr. Bernardo Ofalia of the School of Social Sciences and Education of Mapua University for providing the motivation and technical guidance in finalizing this material. Gratitude is likewise extended to Dr. Lilibeth Sabino and Dr. Mylen Aala-Capuno, past and current heads, respectively, of the Department of Mathematics of Mapua University, for giving them the opportunity and the privilege to contribute to this generation of learners.
