Abstract
Inclusive education is more than just including very young learners with additional needs, developmental disabilities, and marginalized children in regular classrooms alongside typically developing children. It involves creating an inclusive culture, establishing systems and policies, and implementing practices to ensure children have access to quality education, participate in all activities, and are supported by their families and other stakeholders. This module provides the foundation and a guide to have a deep understanding of inclusive education in early childhood settings.
This module is a helpful and practical resource for early childhood day care workers, pre-service teachers, practicing teachers, and school or center administrators who are interested in embracing and implementing inclusion in community-based and school-based early childhood settings. Discussions are anchored on theories, legal bases, and evidence-based strategies. Moreover, this module provides an interactive experience through the TEACH framework, upon which its contents are organized:
- Think- Questions and prompts that active one's background knowledge and experiences related to the lesson.
-Experience- Practical and relevant activities that will allow one to gather information in the current context.
-Assess- Activities for authentic assessment, such as case studies, interviews, and field observations, to provide opportunities for readers to demonstrate what they have learned in a real-life context.
-Challenge- Critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration are tapped through activities to extend what one has learned.
-Harness- Activities that provide deeper insight into what one has learned.
We hope that this module will inspire and challenge readers to spread the awareness of inclusive education, to become inspired to embrace inclusion, and to help make communities and schools inclusive for all children.
