Abstract
This book on Purposive Communication addresses one of the General Education core Courses in the New General Education Curriculum mandated by CMO 20, s. 2013. The authors used the syllabus on Purposive Communication (PC) released by the Commission on Higher Education as a guide in crafting this book.
This book consists of five chapters: each chapter articulates learning outcomes lifted from the CHED PC syllabus and each chapter consists of lessons with specific learning outcomes that gear towards the attainment of the learning outcomes of each chapter.
Each lesson is composed of 6 parts, namely, Engaging: Putting Things in the right perspective, Initializing, concept grounding, firming up, concretizing, and introspecting. The engaging part aims to help the students see the importance of the lesson on their academic endeavors, field of specialization, and/or future career. Initializing presents an introduction of the lesson while concept grounding proffers the grounding of the fundamental concepts of the lessons in the psyche of the students. Firming Up presents activities or questions that will help students remember the fundamental concepts while concretizing engages the students to apply the fundamental concepts learned in each lesson. This book includes introspecting as the last part of each lesson as reflecting helps the students imbibe not only the theories but also the values they need to learn from each lesson.
Chapter I consists of five lessons focusing on understanding the 21st century communication. It details communication processes, principles, and ethics; communication and globalization; local and global communication in multicultural settings; varieties and registers of spoken and written language; and evaluating messages and/or images of different types of texts reflecting different cultures.
Chapter II delves on three lessons on the use of communication aids, specifically preparing multimedia presentation, Pecha Kucha Presentation, and Blogging.
Chapter III centers on communication skills needed in giving information, persuasion, and argumentation. It also dwells on public speaking and making inquiries.
Chapter IV highlights communication in the different work areas, specifically, Nursing, Journalism, Tourism, Teaching, and Business and Trade. It also correspondence for employment and communication within a company.
Chapter V concentrates on academic outputs and addresses concerns in avoiding plagiarism, writing research proposal and literary analysis, and doing academic presentation.
